THAT’S IT FOR THE GRAPE HARVEST IN ALSACE!
The harvest will soon be finished in our vineyards. After six weeks of hard work, joy, good humour and shared moments, this pivotal period of the year comes to an end.
Strange but true: In 1980 the start of the grape harvest was officially declared on October 25th!
Did you know?
During the harvest, each person has a precise role: this one who picks the grapes, that one who drives the tractor, the other who carries the buckets, the one who empties those same buckets, the cellarman, the oenologist…It’s thanks to the commitment of everyone that we can conclude this intense period.
Every year the grape picking begins with the AOC Crémant d’Alsace so as to harvest the freshest fruit with the least sugar content. This way our oenologist can produce fresh and light sparkling wines.
Zoom in on the Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr!
This symbolic terroir allows us to produce our most iconic wines: the Riesling Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr, the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr and the Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr Clos Gaensbroennel. There are in total seven and a half hectares (18.5 acres) of parcels that are harvested on this Grand Cru terroir.
This year, by the way, the Pinot Gris Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr was harvested earlier than usual due to bad weather that complicated the pickers’ work. Yes, the meteorological conditions can have a considerable impact on our harvest: rain dilutes the aromas and the sugar, makes the berries swell, damages the foliage and increases the chances of the fruit rotting.
In whole, the year 2022 appears to our teams to be satisfactory, a sunny vintage that will offer a good level of sugar.
