Hervé Thomas

After finishing his winemaking internship in Australia, Thomas René took over his parents’ land, located between Dambach-la-Ville and Barr. He owns 73 acres of Gewurztraminer and 36 acres of Riesling, both in the Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr appellation. As a lover of nature and animals, he savors each minute spent in the vines.

BECOMING A WINEGROWER, A REVELATION

Winemaking is a family affair. Our origins as a family of winemakers go back to my great-grandfather. Our vines are located in the Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr, a unique and rich terroir that boasts quality grapes. The soil and strong sun exposure ensure pleasant exploitation of the land despite the nature of the terrain, with hills as steep as 30 degrees.

LISTENING TO THE VINE

The capacity for observation and the ability to perceive the environment is crucial in our profession. We develop a particular relationship with the vine. Technical knowledge is necessary, but most essential is having experience working with the terroir. Experienced winemakers notice small details more quickly which reveal whether the vine is healthy or not. Working alongside my father helped me develop the capacity to perceive this more closely.

IN LOVE WITH NATURE

Spending time in the vineyard, admiring the sunrise, the beautiful skies, the smells of nature–this is all part of what makes this job so magical. Throughout the seasons, the vineyard evolves to boast new colors and scents.

THE TASTE OF A JOB WELL DONE

I especially like the pruning period, as it symbolizes renewal. When summer comes, the vine grows and takes its course. The process can be messy, so trellising the vines is important. Once this work is done I can leave my vines in peace, feeling satisfied after a job well done!

The Riesling Grand Cru Kirchberg de Barr is the wine that is most representative of Alsace, the Alsatian people and our values, made with a grape varietal that is honest, fresh and full of character!
